FTB Refund Status: What “Received,” “Processing,” and “Issued” Actually Mean

You check the FTB refund tracker and see one of three words: Received, Processing, or Issued. That's it. No explanation, no timeline, no progress bar. Here's what each status actually tells you.

“Received” = We got it, sit tight

This is the first status you'll see after e-filing. It means the FTB has acknowledged your return. It passed their initial validation checks (your SSN matches, the format is correct, nothing was corrupted in transmission). That's all it means.

No one has looked at your return yet. No calculations have been verified. No refund amount has been confirmed. Your return has simply entered the system. Most e-filed returns move from “Received” to “Processing” within a few business days. This transition happens automatically and rarely causes delays.

“Processing” = The black hole

This is where your refund goes to wait. And wait. And wait.

“Processing” means your return is somewhere in the FTB's review queue. It does not mean someone is actively reviewing it. It does not mean your refund is about to be approved. It means your return is sitting alongside millions of others, waiting for its turn.

This is the status that drives people crazy because it tells you nothing. You could be one day away from your refund being issued. You could be three weeks away. The FTB doesn't give you any way to tell the difference.

Most returns that get stuck are stuck here. The number one reason? Identity verification. The FTB needs to confirm you are who you say you are before they send you money. If your return gets flagged for verification (and many do), it won't move forward until that step is complete. The FTB doesn't always notify you this is happening. Your tracker just keeps saying “Processing” while you wonder what's going on.

“Issued” = Your money is on the way

This is the one you want to see. “Issued” means the FTB has approved your refund and sent it for payment. If you chose direct deposit, the money typically shows up in your bank account within 1-5 business days after this status appears.

If you filed for a paper check, it takes longer. The FTB mails it, and depending on USPS timelines, you could wait another 1-2 weeks after seeing “Issued.”

One important note: “Issued” does not always mean you're getting the exact amount you expected. The FTB may have adjusted your refund due to math errors, outstanding debts, or other offsets. The tracker doesn't show the adjusted amount. You'll find out when the deposit hits or when you receive the FTB's notice in the mail.

The real problem: “Processing” with no end in sight

The gap between “Processing” and “Issued” is where the frustration lives. The FTB says e-filed returns take about 3 weeks. But plenty of people wait 4, 5, 6 weeks or more. Some wait months. And the tracker gives you zero information about why.

You can't see whether your return is being reviewed, waiting for verification, or just sitting in the queue. You don't know if there's something you need to do, or if you just need to keep waiting. The FTB doesn't send proactive updates during this stage. Your only option is to keep refreshing the tracker and hoping the status changes.

What triggers identity verification?

The FTB doesn't publish their exact criteria, but common triggers include:

  • First-time filers in California
  • Filing from a new address
  • Significant changes in income compared to prior year
  • Refund amounts above certain thresholds
  • Discrepancies between your state and federal returns
  • Returns that match patterns associated with fraud

Even if none of these apply, your return can still be flagged. The FTB casts a wide net during peak season, and a significant percentage of returns get caught in the verification process.

Realistic timelines for each status

StatusTypical Duration
Received → Processing1-3 business days
Processing → Issued2-6+ weeks (highly variable)
Issued → Deposit1-5 business days (direct deposit)

The “Processing → Issued” step is where almost all the variance is. If your return sails through without being flagged, it can take as little as two weeks. If you're waiting on identity verification, it could be much longer.
